Week 5 - Tie Fighter (Part 1)

This is my Tie Fighter model so far which I have not completed yet.

First of all I used a cylinder and changed the sides to six so it made a pentagon shape. I then used the side blueprint as a base to build up the side of the wing. This helped a lot as I got the right shape perfectly. To make the insets for the middle part of the wing, I created a few edges from the corner of the middle pentagon that I connected. I then extruded/Beveled these edges and faces to make it more 3D. This was the hardest part of the model as I found it difficult to make a mini pentagon in the middle for me to attach more edges to it but in the end I am pleased with how it turned out.

Because I found making the edges difficult for the middle parts of the wing, I decided to make a clone and basically attach it to the back. This saved a lot of time and probably a lot less polygons as well. As you can see on the left hand side; I have grouped the whole wing together and named it accordingly.

I then cloned this wing and put it on the other side. I am quite happy with how the wings have turned out, although it may be quite difficult to texture them. I have now added a sphere for the middle part of the Tie Fighter, this will now be edited to make it more detailed.

Week 5 - X-Wing Part 2 (Completed)

This is the second part to completing the X-Wing.

After creating the main sections of the cockpit, I then chose all the faces that I needed and used the "Inset" and "Bevel" tools to create the Georgian type bars. This now looks more detailed.
After doing this I then started to create the actual engines of the ship by using Cylinders and extruding. These are all tools that I have used before while creating this model.

To make it easier for me I then cloned this engine four times because the X-Wing has four engines included on the ship. I included detail on the engines by extruding inwards.

Again I used cylinders to make the second part of the engine and also the guns on the outsides.

This is the final form of my model without textures.

Overall the process of this model was long but not too hard for me to handle. I could have got this model done quicker if I concentrated a bit more, which is what I will do for my next model; Tie Fighter.

Throughout this process as you can see I have named all the shapes accordingly to what they are or should be. I have even grouped shapes together, for example. the two shapes for the engine I have grouped together as this is easier to move if I need to move them.

Week 5 - X-Wing Part 1 (Completed)

(It wont let me change the size of the font, I apologise for the small font)

This is my first 3D Model that I have made, this is the X-Wing. I completed this model on 27th October.

First of all I created a box and made it into a rectangle shape, this was my base/starting point for my model. From here it was quite easy to recreate. I chose one vertical side edge and used the tool "Ring" which chooses all the other same vertical edges, this makes it easier for me as it decreases time. After this I then used the "Connect" tool to connect all of these edges, this creates a line going around the middle of the box. This line I then scaled to make a squished pentagon shape. The faces on these sides of the pentagon, I used inset and then used the tool bevel to "extrude" them in a way. I then used "Bevel" again to make the second bit of the wing. This was the very first section done. I also created the front bit of the ship separately by creating loads of vertex so I could make the shape more round, there was probably an easier way of doing this but at the time I thought that this was the best option.

The next save that I did included using the "Bevel" tool to create the other main body of the ship. "Bevel" is a more useful tool for me because it doesn't just extrude it to a straight shape, you can curve it so it has a slight slant which is exactly what I wanted for the X-Wing because this ship doesn't have a straight body. I then connected the front point to the rest of the body. Another thing I did was create the engine at the back of the ship, again I used "Bevel" and  "Extrude" to create this effect.

After examining what I had modelled so far I thought that the ship was too long and that the wings were too far apart. So this was another save that I incremented by using the scale tool.

I then decided to create the cockpit where the pilot would go. This was a matter of creating a few edges and also using the tools "Extrude", "Bevel" and "Scale" while focusing on the side view of the X-Wing to try and get the cockpit the same shape.

So far this model was quite simple to make by using effective but so little tools.

Week 5 - Weekly Blog Entry

This is just a quick entry to discuss how I'm getting on with work and if there are any problems that I am hitting on the way. I will also briefly document any new techniques that I have learnt and will go into more detail on the actual blog entry itself of the models that I have made.

As I have been so busy this week making my models, I haven't uploaded any posts about how I've made them. I completed my first model, which is the X-Wing, on Tuesday 27th October. I then started my second model, which is the Tie Fighter, on the Wednesday of this week. I will upload a post about how I created my X-Wing and how difficult I found it and I will also do this for my Tie Fighter but in more than one post as I have not completed it yet seeing as I am at home for the weekend.

First of all, I didn't really know where to start on my X-Wing, so I decided to build the body first. To make it low polygon efficiency I decided to the build the whole body of the spaceship out of one shape. This worked quite well and am pleased with the outcome although the wings of the spaceship could have been closer together. I didn't run into too many problems as this was quite a simple model to build, for my first model I am quite proud of how it's turned out. I am also proud of the fact that it looks very detailed by not using too many polygons.

I am still completing my Tie Fighter at the moment. A problem that I have ran into so far was the fact that I wasn't really sure how to get the shape of the wing just from a cylinder. I found out that you can change the sides of the cylinder so that it looks more like a hexagon, in which I did so. The wings are the only thing that I have completed so far..

Overall I am hoping to get all three of my models modelled by the end of Week 6 and all models completely textured by the middle of Week 7.  My timing needs to be slightly better as I know I am slightly behind with my work, this doesn't help that I had to go home for this weekend.
